BIO

Angela Keating is a Manitoba-born artist currently living and working in Quebec at Welmo Studio. She graduated from the Alberta University of the Arts in 2020 with a BFA with Distinction in glassblowing. During her studies, she worked as an assistant to Rob Lewis and attended a course at Pilchuck Glass School on scholarship. Since graduating, she has worked as a teaching assistant at both Pittsburgh Glass Center and Pilchuck. Through her work, Keating seeks to elicit emotion and express gratitude for life by translating her interest in the intricacies and phenomena of anatomy, astronomy, and light, through glass and drawing. Keating is fascinated with the technical skill required to blow glass and finds glass to be an effective medium through which to translate her concepts due to its innate fragile yet durable structure.

Artist Statement

Human anatomy is a subject that I am deeply interested in and which motivates my work. Its complex nature brings to mind all the structure which had to be created to produce and sustain life. I marvel at the intricacy of these systems and draw inspiration from them as a way to express my gratitude for and awe of the beauty in life.

I am equally enamoured with the technical and conceptual aspects of creating with glass and have always been inclined to working with my hands. I enjoy the intensity in the process of blowing glass and find it a satisfying medium because of its ephemeral transparency and the duality of its strong yet fragile nature. I aim to evoke emotion and instill a sense of wonder, keeping in mind the marriage of concept and function to provide my audience with an object of purpose and beauty.
